By Royal Charter, the British Academy was founded in 1902. In 2022, we will commemorate this milestone by examining the first 12 decades of our existence and examining the evolution of the British Academy as the preeminent body in the United Kingdom for the Humanities and Social Sciences.
The only way to address today’s complex challenges—from climate change to artificial intelligence, from prosperity development to well-being improvement—is to have a deeper understanding of people, cultures, and communities. We fund researchers and initiatives both domestically and internationally, engage the public in new ideas and discussions, and bring together academics, the public sector, industry, and civil society to shape public policy that benefits everybody. The National Academy for the Humanities and Social Sciences in the UK is called the British Academy.
