The elected leadership of the province-level governments of the Métis Nation guides the MNC, which represents the Métis Nation both nationally and internationally. To “secure a healthy space for the Métis Nation’s ongoing existence within the Canadian federation” is the stated objective of the MNC.
In the latter part of the 18th century, the Métis became a separate Indigenous people and country in the ancient Northwest. In addition to the Prairie Provinces of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, the historical Métis Nation Homeland also includes adjacent areas of Ontario, British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and the northern United States. The Red River Settlement was allowed to join Confederation as the Province of Manitoba in 1870 thanks to negotiations led by Louis Riel’s Métis Provisional Government.
